The witch beliefs of the Nyakyusa of Tanganyika and the Pondo of South Africa differ considerably. An attempts is made to relate these differences to the variations in the social structure of the two peoples. The Nyakyusa emphasis on lust for good food as the main incentive to witchcraft is connected with the fact that they live in age-villages, not kinship villages, while the Pondo emphasis on sex in witchcraft is related to their insistence on clan exogamy.
