Transfer of plasmid RP4 between introduced pseudomonads was studied in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil of wheat, in soil chambers and in culture tubes. In both experiments, the presence of growing wheat roots stimulated the occurrence of plasmid transfers in the soil. The plasmid transfer frequencies in rhizosphere soil in the soil chambers were consistently higher than those in rhizosphere soil in the culture tubes, indicating an influence of the experimental set-up.
