ABSTRACT Clergy and other religious professionals are generally ill-equipped to help women heal from the psychospiritual trauma of acquaintance rape. Although culturally situated to help, pastoral care givers have not had a framework for understanding the psychospiritual effects of acquaintance rape or the pastoral guidelines necessary to be pastorally effective. To be caring partners in the healing process, religious professionals must: (1) know the definitions and prevalence of acquaintance rape; (2) know the facts and distortions about acquaintance rape, including why some women do not report and the consequences if they do; (3) appropriately respond to a survivor's needs while being aware of sensitive issues surrounding these responses; and (4) make informed and appropriate referrals.
