The article examines the early period of the biography of General E. V. Bogdanovich, before the beginning of the 1880s, when the salon of the Bogdanovich spouses was already widely known in St. Petersburg. On the basis of archival materials of the RGIA and the GARF, the General's origin, his career in the Navy and the Ministry of internal Affairs, and incidents that occurred in Bogdanovich's personal life and affected his reputation are considered. The factors that allowed Bogdanovich to achieve his high position and become popular among the General public are revealed.
