Retired chief justice Sandile Ngcobo had an illustrious career as a lawyer, a judge and a chief justice spanning over four decades, up to (and beyond) his formal retirement in 2011. During his tenure as chief justice, Ngcobo, like his predecessors, was committed to brokering compromise and to doing a great deal to preserve the intellectual integrity and collegial unity of the court. His style and strengths were of course different from those of his predecessors.
