Lion Planning commissioned Allen Archaeology Limited to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land off Cold Overton Road, Oakham, Rutland, to help support a planning application for a residential development. The geophysical survey consisted of a detailed gradiometer survey of as much of the development area as was possible, extending to approximately 3.4ha. The survey was undertaken in a series of 30m grids across the site. This survey revealed few features of archaeological interest, with the ridge and furrow clearly visible on the site also seen clearly within the survey results. There were a couple of circular features which could represent small enclosures or possibly Iron Age roundhouses. A potential former boundary or large enclosure features is also presence. There are a number of amorphous positive features which may be associated with the ridge and furrow earthworks, but could also be pits, soil-filled hollows or former ponds. Large areas of magnetic noise represent telegraph poles, support wires and an electricity pylon within the site. There are also two dipolar linear features which represent buried modern services
