The national identification scheme is a major initiative of governments to integrate the e-government services of a country. The Government of India (GoI) has started a massive project to enrol all the citizens into a single database through a unique identification (UID) number, called Aadhaar. The aim of this study is to understand the acceptance of UID among Indian citizens, using the technology acceptance model (TAM). The survey data were collected from 385 prospective UID users and analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The results suggest that the core constructs of TAM and the perceived trust in UID have a strong impact on Indian citizens' intentions of using UID. The study also provides a possible explanation for the significant relationships among constructs, and how this information can be utilised to improve acceptance of this scheme in India.
