Abstract Questionnaires were provided to large groups of people travelling in a hovercraft and on a local bus service. The results from these questionnaires were compared with a paired comparison experimental procedure using 24 subjects. The paired comparison procedure was designed to assess preference for various modes of transport and preferences for certain qualities of the passenger environment in these transports. Differences and similarities between the two methods of assessment are discussed.
