The vertical stability of an elongated tokamak plasma with infinite conductivity is numerically investigated under simple assumptions, in toroidal co-ordinates. The rectangular configuration is stable for an elongation ratio of less than 3 ∼ 4, depending upon the current profile. It is shown that the stabilization at high elongation ratio is related to the rotational-transform constraint.
