Purpose In the era of digital economy, mastering and integrating digital knowledge thoroughly has become an important strategic for manufacturing to enhance energy-environmental efficiency (EEE) and achieve sustainable development through intelligent technologies. However, the existing research has not fully clarified the mechanism of the green effect of intelligent technology and digital knowledge. Therefore, this paper is based on the knowledge orchestration theory, uses a sample of 905 manufacturing enterprises from 2010 to 2022, and empirically study the direct effect and mechanism of intelligent manufacturing (IM) on EEE. The research finds that IM can significantly promote the EEE, with digital knowledge reconstruction depth and breadth being important mediating mechanism, and industry-university-research cooperation (IURC) being an important positive moderating mechanism. Under conditions of greater energy endowment, stronger IM capabilities and multiple sources of digital knowledge, the impact of IM on EEE is more positive. This study aims to investigate the impact of the important development trend of intelligent manufacturing on the energy-environmental efficiency of manufacturing enterprises, as well as the mechanism of knowledge reconstruction in this process, and further examine the important role of industry-university-research collaboration in knowledge transfer and knowledge reconstruction. Design/methodology/approach Therefore, this paper is based on the knowledge orchestration theory, uses a sample of 905 manufacturing enterprises from 2010 to 2022, and empirically study the direct effect and mechanism of IM on EEE. It conducts a baseline regression using multi-period difference-in-differences (DID). It also carries out robustness tests using the event study method and so on. Findings The research finds that IM can significantly promote the EEE, with digital knowledge reconstruction depth and breadth being important mediating mechanisms and industry-university-research cooperation (IURC) being an important positive moderating mechanism. Under conditions of greater energy endowment, stronger IM capabilities and multiple sources of digital knowledge, the impact of IM on EEE is more positive. Originality/value First, it advances the theoretical paradigm for digital knowledge’s green value realization. Second, this study significantly advances the theoretical understanding of IM’s green effects mechanisms. Third, the authors extend the boundary conditions of IM’s environmental impact by incorporating institutional factors.
