He is founder and president of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), which produces a broad spectrum of information services and systems. The inventor of ‘Current Contents’ and the ‘Science Citation Index’, he received his BS in chemistry from Columbia University, and returned there for a Master's degree in library science. He was awarded his PhD in structural linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania.
