An overview of sequential methods and their application in clinical trials

This manuscript gives a brief overview of the ethics of interim analysis of accumulating data and the complexity of decision making for early termination. A review of previously proposed sequential methods for data monitoring is given and some discussion as to why they have not been adopted. Finally, attention is focused on two recent concepts, group sequential boundaries and stochastic curtailment, which have promise in their applicability and utility.
