Abstract This paper illustrates the application of a trend test as a first step in the utilization of analysis of variance procedures for the estimation of the reliability of skill tests. Tests for over-all trend and orthogonal components of trend were applied to bowling and softball velocity data. It was demonstrated that systematic linear variation existed from trial to trial in the bowling velocity data. There was no evidence of systematic variation from trial to trial for the softball velocity data.
