We present a fast algorithm to extract a shadow model from a monocular colour scene exploiting the hue, luminosity, saturation (HLS) colour components. The method allows one to recover target shapes in diurnal scene for improved identification and it is based on the definition of a global bitmap model and a more particular strip bitmap model to identify shadow regions. Each pixel in the image is then classified as shadow or target by a comparison with these models.
