The interaction representation for bosons of spin 0 or 1 in an electromagnetic field is given, using -matrix theory. The gauge invariance of the scheme is proved. The photon self-energy is shown to be zero, and the meson self-energy is evaluated. The vacuum polarization is evaluated for a particular representation of the -matrices.
