While researchers in the United States are looking for new approaches to developing AIDS vaccines (see main text), two first-generation vaccines are inching toward full-blown efficacy trials in Thailand. However, as plans for the trials advance, a debate is heating up. Critics within Thailand, using data supplied by U.S. researchers, contend that the vaccines are likely to prove worthless, while others worry that the furor could frustrate the best chance to determine once and for all whether these preparations can slow the epidemic.
