Does the amplitude of f waves on conventional ECG correlate with the etiology of atrial fibrillation or left atrial size?
The amplitude of f waves on conventional ECG cannot reliably predict the etiology of atrial fibrillation or left atrial size in individual patients.
Abstract. The amplitude of the f waves has previously been correlated to the etiology of the atrial fibrillation and to the size of the left atrium. This investigation has revealed coarse f waves to occur more frequently than fine f waves in rehumatic heart disease, which is in agreement with earlier reports. In arteriosclerotic heart disease, however, fine f waves occurred in only 21%, which is in opposition to the result of most earlier reports. No correlation between the amplitude of the f waves and the left atrial size was found. It is concluded that in the individual case no safe conclusions can be drawn from the size of the f waves in conventional ECG leads.
