The invasion of American culture by television may prove to be the defining aspect of our modern times. It is difficult to imagine what our lives would be like without television's presence. Television has not only reflected our history, but to a great extent television has influenced it. It has been estimated that in the 1920s, the average adult in the United States spent only 3 to 4 hours per day using the media (newspapers, magazines, books, radio, and film), but with the advent of television, the time spent on media increased by 40%.1 See also pp 999 and 1004.
