Abstract While the paradigm of the admissions social workers/marketer is not relevant in the context of long-term care services in South Africa, the role and function of social work remains significant nonetheless. A framework of a developing country is presented where resources are sparse and unevenly distributed with the aged, frail and chronically ill amongst the most vulnerable of this country's citizens. A series of new roles and functions for South African social workers to respond to the widespread poverty, enormous backlogs in service provision, increasing need and economic stagnation are presented.
