This paper introduces a robot named AI suitcase, a navigation assistive robot for visually impaired people. As the name implies, AI suitcase is a suitcase-shaped robot, and it can travel autonomously to arbitrary destinations. By grasping the handle on the robot and walking together, users can safely travel unfamiliar sites and reach their destination. AI suitcase was originally developed as a navigation robot named CaBot in CMU (Carnegie Melon University). In 2019, Japanese companies established CAAMP (Consortium for Advanced Assistive Mobility Platform) to develop and improve the navigation technology aiming for widespread use of robots. CAAMP has developed multiple versions of the robots: the indoor model, the outdoor model, the compact model, and so on. We, Shimizu Corporation, not only participate in the consortium but also work on development of proprietary version of AI suitcase to suggest the different functions such as the intuitive user interface using the force-torque sensor. Before subject experiments, we had a navigation test and confirmed that the robot travels autonomously and safely in a common building environment. In addition, for the future subject experiments, the data were collected that may objectively describes the navigation evaluation. We suppose that some data during the navigation, such as the distance between the robot and the user, is related to the evaluation by post-questionnaire.
