AEROBICALLY, Staphylococcus aureus has been grown Fildes et al. 1936 on a mixture of nutrients of which only one component was unknown Knight, 1935. This medium would not however permit anaerobic growth. For growth anae- robically, it was necessary to add pyruvic acid and a second unknown substance (Factor III, Fildes et al. 1936). By a process of fractionation, confirmed by synthesis, this substance is now identified as uradil.
