ABSTRACT Aim: To compare the efficacy of ultrasonics and diode laser activation in combination with retreatment files, in retrieving bioceramic-based obturating material from root canals, and to assess the area of residual filling material using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) both in the axial and sagittal sections. Methods: Sixty-six single-rooted mandibular premolars were obturated with gutta-percha and a bioceramic sealer (Safe Endo Bioactive RCS) using the lateral condensation technique. A CBCT scan was performed, and the samples were stored at 37°C and 100% humidity for 30 days. HyFlex retreatment files (30/07, Coltene) were used to remove the bulk of the obturating material, which was confirmed radiographically. This was followed by irrigant activation by using ultrasonics and diode laser, CBCT evaluation was again conducted to quantify the canal surface area in the root canal evaluated both in axial and sagittal sections. Results: The results revealed a statistically significant difference between the effectiveness of ultrasonics and diode laser activation ( P < 0.001), in the removal of Bioceramic-based obturating material. The mean percentage area of residual obturating material was found to be lower in diode laser group in both axial and sagittal sections suggesting superior efficacy of diode laser in the retrievability of bioceramic-based obturating material from the root canals. Conclusion: This study concludes that diode laser activation can serve as an effective tool for enhancing the retrieval of Bioceramic-based obturating material during endodontic retreatment.
