Abstract Liver biopsies can be used to diagnose, assess, prognose, and guide treatment for numerous liver conditions such as abnormal liver enzymes, cirrhosis, postliver transplants, or known liver masses. Percutaneous image-guided liver biopsy is considered the standard; however, there are contraindications such as ascites, coagulopathy, and thrombocytopenia. In these patients, the transvenous liver biopsy can be employed instead. This review will highlight the indications for percutaneous and transvenous liver biopsies and instances where each biopsy may be preferred.
