P. A. McDermott, J. J. Glutting, J. N. Jones, and J. V. Noonan (1989) cluster analyzed the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (D. Wechsler, 1981) standardization data and found that a 9-cluster solution provided the best typology of core profiles. They recommended that a profile be considered unique in relation to the general population if it did not conform to one of the normative types. The present study determined the prevalence of unique and normative profiles among brain-damaged patients (N = 161) and contrasted these findings with the standardization prevalence rates. Only 29 patients had atypical profiles, and 132 had normative profiles. Patients with unique profiles could not be distinguished from those with normative profiles on the basis of age, education, or diagnosis
