Background: Research suggests that Chinese students are not educated about contemporary racial conflicts and consequently avoid confrontations in North America. Analysis: Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews, this study examines how Chinese international students in Toronto experienced and responded to anti-Chinese racism during the COVID-19 pandemic, and compares these findings with those from previous studies. Conclusions and implications: The findings highlight Chinese international students’ use of digital media to learn about racism, report incidents, construct supportive communities, and challenge racist content, and reveal that these platforms can be racially exclusive and expose them to racism.
