Bradkirk Hall Barn, Weeton Road, Medlar with Wesham, Preston

CFA Archaeology Ltd was commissioned by Benjamin Towers to create an historic building record of a late 18th or early 19th century barn which lay within the curtilage of a Grade II listed farmhouse on the outskirts of Weshem, near Blackpool in Lancashire. The survey was required prior to the conversion into a dwelling. The recording found the evidence of reused cruck timbers from an earlier building and a surviving horse-engine house which illuminate a change in the quality of agricultural buildings and techniques in the latter part of the 18th and early part of the 19th century. Bradkirk Hall Barn was constructed at a time when farm buildings, belonging to larger estates, were being built to a higher standard to attract a new breed of tenant farmers that could increase yields by employing modern farming methods.
