Thermodynamic Rendering of Consciousness: From Dissipative Adaptation and Free Energy Minimization to the Emergence of the Biological Self

Traditional approaches exploring the origins of life and consciousness have often been confined to teleological biological evolution. However, this study redefines the starting point of evolution as a pure thermodynamic information-processing event experienced by a "non-material (inanimate) group composed of three or more elements" prior to the emergence of organisms. When a powerful electromagnetic stimulus (energy) is externally applied amidst a storm of disordered entropy, non-material nodes do not possess an internal dynamic mechanism to move actively; rather, they are passively subjected to and driven by the incoming energy flux. If this energy stagnates, the structure faces thermodynamic collapse. However, as established in the physics of complex systems where three or more interacting elements produce unpredictable entropic resultants (Anderson, 1972), this forced exposure generates profound non-linear turbulence. According to the "Dissipative Adaptation" theory proposed by Jeremy England (2013) and non-equilibrium thermodynamic principles (Prigogine & Nicolis, 1977), a cluster of particles, though passively driven, spontaneously binds and rearranges into complex structures to absorb energy most efficiently and dissipate heat outside the system. The thermodynamic tension and "Entropic Resultant Energy" generated in this passive process are not simple chemical reactions, but rather the first survival adaptation and information-processing computation to handle environmental uncertainty and optimize the system to avoid structural destruction. This microscopic thermodynamic survival mechanism assumes physical properties aimed at minimizing energy dissipation (friction) in accordance with Landauer's Principle (1961). This paper aims to elucidate how this initial tension, originating from the passive yet complex physical entanglement of three or more elements, integrated with Karl Friston's "Free Energy Principle" (2010) to evolve into a biological brain and Self, and how this evolution ultimately converges into the highest computational state of the biological self.
