Does ezetimibe added to statin therapy improve cardiovascular outcomes and lower LDL cholesterol in patients after acute coronary syndromes?
Patients after acute coronary syndromes
Ezetimibe added to statin therapy
Statin therapy alone
LDL cholesterol levels and cardiovascular outcomes
Adding ezetimibe to statin therapy after acute coronary syndromes lowers LDL cholesterol below previous targets and provides additional cardiovascular benefit.
When added to statin therapy, ezetimibe resulted in incremental lowering of LDL cholesterol levels and improved cardiovascular outcomes. Moreover, lowering LDL cholesterol to levels below previous targets provided additional benefit. (Funded by Merck; IMPROVE-IT ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT00202878.).
“Collectively, this is not a story about bad drugs or bad guidelines. It’s a story about a broken system of delivery.”
