The appellations have usually attempted to denote the author's concept of its pathogenesis. The terms "terminal" and "marantic" endocarditis or endocardiosis imply a type of vegetation or valve change that terminates a chronic illness, and that it is a more or less incidental finding of only pathologic interest.
