A typology of environmental decline and organizational response, based on two dimensions of environmental change, is proposed. The typology provides a much finer-grained basis for examining organizational decline than is currently available. It also provides a mechanism through which the contradictory prescriptions for the management of decline that are found in the literature can be integrated.
