ABSTRACTA rationale is presented for the psychological analysis of leisure activities. Recent studies of the structure of recreation and leisure pastimes are reviewed, along with studies of the psychological characteristics of participants in selected activities. A Leisure Activities Blank (LAB) listing 121 different pastimes is developed to systematically sample the domain of past leisure and recreation behavior. A factor analysis of LAB-Past responses for a stratified random sample of 288 Marin County, California residents reveals six dimensions: Mechanics, Crafts, Intellectual, Slow Living, Sports, and Glamour Sports. Conceptual analysis of LAB scales is initiated by correlating Ss scores with a number of demographic variables, and with scores on the Environmental Response Inventory. The structure of the LAB-Past scales is further elucidated by spatially arraying the activities on the surface of a sphere (using the SPAN program of the BCTRY System of Ouster and Factor Analysis). Finally, directions for further study are suggested.1KEYWORDS: Psychological structureleisurerecreationfactorsclusterspersonalityassessmentdomain sampling
