The article deals with the principle of historicism, its nature, interpretation and role in the study of political and legal ideas and institutions. The emphasis is on the fact that the understanding of this principle, which has serious methodological implications, is not uniform. Two factors explain the plurality of opinions more than others: the historical period and the researcher’s affiliation with a particular historical and scientific tradition. It is emphasized that despite differing opinions, the principle of historicism remains a reliable research tool.
