The Contribution of Artificial Intelligence to the Teaching of Communicative Skills in the EFL Class: A Theoretical Review

This literature review investigates how AI supports communicative skills in EFL education, specifically listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Using 25 peer-reviewed studies of the last five years, the review elucidates the boons, downsides, and teaching consequences of AI integration in language teaching. Thematic analysis was performed on data using color-coding to classify skill-related benefits and drawbacks. AI tools such as Duolingo and ChatGPT were found to increase learner interest, deliver tailored feedback, and encourage motivation, notably in receptive skills, writing, and speaking. Still, shortcomings are missing genuine human connection, too much dependence on technology, adjustment challenges in different environments, and possible effects on imagination and socio-pragmatic ability. The review highlights AI's ability to enhance performance and support autonomy but not to replicate emotional, cultural, and social language learning factors. Therefore, a hybrid teaching approach is best, with AI as a supplemental resource and teachers facilitating human connection. For EFL teachers, this means welcoming AI as a teaching partner, not a substitute, which aids focused skill growth while keeping the human bond central to language learning. Teachers should critically assess AI tools, adapt them for student needs, and create learning that blends tech with real communication.
