The women of Assam play a pivotal role in culture, economic, political and social field. But it is a general perception is that rural women are always staying back line of society; even not get front position in any religious as well as social activities. But in the present context, the government has implemented various programs and schemes focused on empowering women across different spheres including financial independence, education, health and entrepreneurship. The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) is the first scheme that provides guaranteed livelihood security to Indians Rural people. The scheme aim to offering at least 100 days guaranteed wage employment in a financial year for unskilled rural labour including women, which help to empower women and promoting gender parity in rural areas. This paper deals with the participation of rural women in MGNREGA and implementation system, drawbacks of the scheme in the selected study area as well as the socio- economic status of women in their society. The study conducted with help of both primary and secondary source of data.
