The scientific research is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of proper names of the literary heroes from the novel "The Metropolitan's Two Stepsons" by V. Ivchenko. One of the tasks of literary onomastics is the search and reasoned interpretations of the role of proper names of the literary heroes in the works of modern authors. Unfortunately, Vladyslav Ivchenko's prose remains insufficiently studied, therefore the study of the names of the characters in his works is relevant. Our goal is to research proper names of the literary heroes that function on the pages of the novel "The Metropolitan's Two Stepsons" by V. Ivchenko; the task is to describe proper names of the literary heroes, to prove that they are means of characterizing the heroes. The object of the study is the names of the characters from the novel "The Metropolitan's Two Stepsons" by V. Ivchenko. The subject of the study is the information content of the proper names of the literary heroes of this novel. The following methods were applied: descriptive, contextual-interpretative, distributive, etymological analysis. It is proved that proper names of the literary heroes of the novel not only carry important information, characterize the heroes, but also reflect the author's worldview, become a significant means of reproducing the national tradition, and shape the consciousness of Ukrainians. The author approaches this issue in a postmodern way: on the basis of a real anthroponymicon, he creates something new, unpredictable, and he constantly experiments. It is found that the name Andrey Sheptytsky has become a symbol of strength, invincibility, a "rock of spirit and faith". In times of national trials, the spiritual mentor of the Ukrainian people, the Prince of the Ukrainian Church, remains the bright figure and majestic name of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. V. Ivchenko's original approach to choosing names for his characters "provides an extraordinary and artistic value of proper names of the literary heroes". Our research will significantly supplement the general understanding of anthroponyms as basic components of the onymic system, and will become the key to understanding the cultural and historical context of Ukrainian names. We see the analysis and comparative characteristics of the names of heroes in the works of modern authors as a prospect for further research.
