Expressionism Revisited: Stefan Ruzowitzky's Hinterland (2021)

Abstract: Hinterland (2021) is a thriller set in Vienna in 1920 about a group of ex-soldiers who have returned from captivity in Russia to find themselves targeted by a serial killer. Directed by Stefan Ruzowitzky, it is also an experimental film, shot almost entirely using blue-screen technology, with digitally created sets inspired by the Expressionist classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari . The film gives us an idea of what it was like to live in the destitute Austria of that time, and it also evokes in places the dark Vienna of The Third Man —but it is best seen as a homage to the cinema and art of Expressionism. Abstract: Hinterland (2021) ist ein Thriller, der um 1920 in Wien spielt, wo eine aus Kriegsgefangenschaft in Russland heimgekehrte Gruppe von Soldaten von einem Serienmörder heimgesucht wird. In der Regie von Stefan Ruzowitzky, ist es auch ein experimenteller Film, da es fast ausschließlich mit Blue-Screen-Technik gedreht wurde, und zwar mit digitalen Kulissen, die von dem expressionistischen Klassiker Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari inspiriert sind. Der Film vermittelt uns einen Einblick in das verarmte Österreich jener Zeit und er evoziert auch in manchen Stellen das dunkle Wien von The Third Man —aber es ist vor allem eine Huldigung an das Kino und die Kunst des Expressionismus.
