Transport maintenance depots (TMDs) play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability of vehicles in South Africa's transport sector. A randomized field trial was conducted among five TMDs across South Africa. Data were collected using an econometric model for cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA). The econometric model revealed that the deployment of predictive maintenance strategies reduced vehicle downtime by 15%. The randomized field trial provided robust evidence supporting the efficacy of TMD systems in enhancing operational efficiency. Implementing predictive maintenance protocols and continuous improvement initiatives are recommended to further enhance cost-effectiveness. transport maintenance depots, cost-effectiveness analysis, econometric model, South Africa The maintenance outcome was modelled as Y₈ₓ=₀+₁X₈ₓ+uᵢ+₈ₓ, with robustness checked using heteroskedasticity-consistent errors.
