The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2008 was awarded to Roger Y. Tsien (1952–2016), Osamu Shimomura (b. 1928), and Martin Chalfie (b. 1947) “for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP.” Tsien, Professor of Pharmacology, Chemistry, and Biochemistry at the University California, San Diego School of Medicine, died at the age of 64, apparently while suffering a “medical event” while bicycling, in Eugene, Oregon on August 24, 2016.
