Facing Sexual Objectification: A Qualitative Study on South Korean Adolescent Girls’ Perspectives

The purpose of the present study was to elaborate on the aspects of sexual objectification experienced by South Korean adolescent girls, focusing on the contexts of family, school, and media. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine South Korean adolescent girls who had engaged in dieting and were analyzed using the constant comparative analysis (CCA) method. The results showed that experiences of sexual objectification among the participants manifested through appearance-based evaluations, direct sexual harassment, and widespread societal compulsion to adhere to beauty standards. Participants also reported diverse sources of sexually objectified experiences, including family members who imposed appearance standards, male peers who engaged in appearance-based mocking and harassment, and media that emphasized beauty-centric ideals. Implications for concrete intervention strategies in counseling, education, and policy for preventing and intervening in adolescent girls’ experiences of sexual objectification were discussed, along with suggestions for future research. 본 연구의 목적은 한국의 여자 청소년들이 가족, 학교, 미디어의 맥락에서 경험하는 성적 대상화 경험의 양상을 탐색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 다이어트 경험이 있는 한국의 여자 청소년 9명을 대상으로 심층 면담을 실시하였으며, 수집된 자료는 지속적 비교분석(constant comparative analysis) 방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 한국의 여자 청소년 참여자들의 성적 대상화 경험에는 외모 중심의 평가, 직접적인 성희롱, 그리고 사회 전반에 걸쳐 미의 기준을 따르도록 강요하는 문화적 압력이 포함되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 참여자들에 따르면, 한국의 여자 청소년들에게 성적 대상화 경험을 제공하는 대상 역시 다양한 것으로 나타났는데, 외모의 기준을 강요하는 가족 구성원, 외모를 조롱하거나 성희롱하는 남성 또래 집단, 그리고 외모 중심의 아름다움 기준을 강조하는 미디어 등이 포함되었다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 한국의 여자 청소년의 성적 대상화 경험을 예방하고 개입하기 위한 상담, 교육, 정책 차원의 구체적인 개입 전략에 대한 시사점을 논의하였으며, 향후 연구를 위한 제언을 제시하였다.
