India possesses one of the largest education systems in the world and a rapidly expanding youth population, offering immense potential for economic growth and global competitiveness. However, a persistent gap between academic learning and industry requirements continues to challenge graduate employability and workforce readiness. While higher education institutions emphasize theoretical knowledge, industries increasingly demand practical skills, technological proficiency, adaptability, and professional competencies. This mismatch has resulted in skill shortages, underemployment, and reduced productivity despite rising educational attainment. This research paper examines educational reforms in India aimed at bridging the gap between academia and industry. It analyzes the structural causes of the gap, evaluates reform initiatives such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, industry-linked curricula, and experiential learning models, and assesses their impact on employability and economic development. Using a qualitative research methodology based on secondary data, the study highlights policy, institutional, and industry-driven strategies necessary for aligning education with labor market needs and achieving sustainable development in India.
