India has the second highest population of the working age (15-59 years) individual in the world. Education is not just about teaching people an arcane subject but equipping them with meta skills of language, record keeping, data entry and data analysis that can be translate into many other skill. The skill set of this population group plays a critical role in growth of country. Rajasthan became first state in the country to incorporate skill development program in higher education to improve employability. In this regard IGNOU in collaboration with state’s development of college education has prepared 16 courses of entrepreneurship and skill development. India has demographic advantages of the largest youth population in the world. In India education plays a vital role to build skill-based society of the 21st century. It is the quality of education that decides the quality of human resource of country. The intent of present paper is to integration of skill program in higher education whether it is wage employment or self -employment improving income is about skill that people have. Fortunately the present government is sized of matter and skill development mission could be effectively leverage to teach students skill that might help them earn a decent livelihood through government- led skill development courses. Primarily under the Skill India Mission and PMKVY, offer a vast range of National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) certified, free vocational training in sectors like IT, healthcare, manufacturing, electronics and apparel. This paper explores the paradigm shift in the Indian Higher Education system toward a competency-based model under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It investigates how integrating Vocational Education and Training (VET) within degree programs influences the employability of rural youth. The study identifies structural barriers in rural areas and evaluates the effectiveness of government-led skill initiatives in creating sustainable local livelihoods.
