This artistic research is an exploration of interactivity at the crossroads of composition, improvisation and electroacoustic music. More specifically it looks into how interactions between performing musician(s) and digital technology can be composed and how musical behaviours might be encoded into digital technology. These questions are addressed through consideration of different theoretical concepts, previous relevant musical works and lastly and most importantly, through the creation, and subsequent analysis, of my own works. These works are primarily performances combining Max patches with myself playing percussion instruments. The findings of the research are that interactions between performing musician(s) and digital music technology can be composed by encoding musical behaviours through following a mixture of three modalities (composed instrument, interactive score, artificial agent). Considering how agency is distributed in these systems offered me a way to examine the functioning of the different parts and later informed my decisions in my own creative process. keywords: composition, interactive, digital musical instruments, Electroacoustic, max msp
