This article examines the beneficial role of physical-motor activity as a complementary therapeutic intervention for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Drawing on over three decades of practical experience in adaptive physical education and sports training, combined with evidence from scientific literature, the author highlights the positive effects of structured physical activity on motor development, behavioral regulation, social interaction, emotional well-being, and cognitive functioning. The paper reviews studies demonstrating that regular physical exercise, particularly when incorporated into early intervention programs, can contribute to improvements in social communication skills, motor abilities, self-regulation, and overall quality of life in individuals with ASD. Particular attention is given to the neurobiological mechanisms underlying these benefits, including the influence of exercise on neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and norepinephrine, as well as neuroplasticity and brain-derived neurotrophic factors. In addition to discussing current scientific evidence, the article presents insights derived from the author's long-term work with the NGO Actitud in Lima, Peru, where physical activity programs have been implemented to support individuals with ASD and related conditions. The author argues that physical-motor activity should be recognized as an essential component of integrative therapeutic approaches, promoting not only physical health but also cognitive, emotional, social, and inclusive development. The article advocates for increased recognition of physical activity as a valuable intervention strategy in autism support programs and encourages further research into its role in behavior modification and developmental outcomes for people with neurodevelopmental disorders.
