Social media has become an integral part of the daily lives of young people worldwide. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, and X have transformed communication, learning, entertainment, and social interaction. While social media offers unprecedented opportunities for information access, self-expression, networking, and educational engagement, concerns regarding mental health, cyberbullying, misinformation, privacy risks, and excessive screen time have intensified. This study critically examines the impact of social media on youth development through a review of contemporary literature and secondary evidence. The paper explores the social, psychological, educational, and behavioural dimensions of social media use among youth. Findings suggest that social media exerts both positive and negative influences. Positive outcomes include enhanced connectivity, educational opportunities, civic engagement, and digital literacy, whereas negative consequences include anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, sleep disturbances, and exposure to harmful online content. The study concludes that balanced and responsible social media use, combined with digital literacy and parental guidance, is essential for maximizing benefits while minimizing risks.
