Urban informal settlements in Kigali, Rwanda face significant waste management challenges due to inadequate infrastructure and community engagement. A survey was conducted among residents from six urban informal settlements, assessing their perceptions and participation in waste reduction activities. Residents showed a willingness to participate in recycling programmes with clear communication about benefits, leading to a 45% increase in waste diversion rates. Community engagement significantly enhances the effectiveness of sustainable waste management initiatives by fostering active participant involvement. Promote transparent and participatory approaches that emphasise mutual benefit for both community members and waste management providers.
