Abstract

Fasting is an ancient therapeutic practice currently being redefined by modern molecular re-search. This article explores the physiological and clinical impact of a supervised seven-day fasting protocol, bridging traditional naturopathic principles with recent breakthroughs in sys-tems biology. Following the depletion of glycogen stores within the first 24 to 48 hours, the body transitions into a state of nutritional ketosis characterised by the production of β-hydroxybutyrate. This metabolic switch activates key sensors, including AMPK and sirtuins, which trigger intensive autophagy and "multisystemic proteomic reprogramming". Central to the protocol is the regenerative peak observed around the 72-hour mark, involving leukocyte recycling and haematopoietic stem cell activation. Clinical evidence demonstrates significant improvements in glycaemic control, lipid profiles, and blood pressure normalisation. However, the study emphasises that the safety and efficacy of prolonged fasting are contingent upon rig-orous clinical screening and structured refeeding to mitigate the risk of Refeeding Syndrome, in accordance with UK General Medical Council (GMC) and NICE standards. By integrating com-plementary practices such as hepatobiliary phytotherapy and mindful breathing, supervised fasting emerges as a potent, evidence-based tool for metabolic restoration and cellular renewal within contemporary naturopathic practice.
