The approaches to the definition of the economic category "production potential of an enterprise" are considered, the analysis of the accepted resource approach to substantiating the essence of this type of potential as a combination of all types of resources, resources and capabilities, the technical system of production, the material basis for the reproduction of goods, etc. is performed. A new approach is proposed that interprets the potential of an object as its ability to manifest itself in relation to the external environment, the total potential of an enterprise is differentiated by types into technical, production and economic, the positive and negative components of the potential are highlighted, an algorithm for calculating the production potential of an enterprise is given, taking into account its structural components (realized, reserve, surplus, potential development).
