In May 2025, Heneb: Clwyd Powys was commissioned by Ryminster Properties to undertake an Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment in connection with the refurbishment and extension to Beech Hill, Number 20 Kennedy Road, Shrewsbury. This assessment formed a supporting statement for the planning application as requested within the Pre-Application Consultation (PAC) advice received from the Shropshire Council Planning Officer. The assessment sought to establish a baseline for the archaeological subsurface potential of the site, to help determine the planning application, and any need for further archaeological mitigation. The objectives included identifying and locating known archaeological assets both within the proposed development area and its surroundings. By analysing the data and conducting documentary research, the assessment also aimed to uncover any undocumented archaeological potential. The analysis of the site's archaeological potential indicated that early post-medieval remains had the greatest potential to be encountered, particularly connected to historical market and guild activities, though these remains are expected to be mainly artefactual. A record for a demolished windmill, however, might mean some structural remains survive. The likelihood of discovering prehistoric and Roman artifacts ranges from low to medium; if found, they could provide medium to high significance for understanding local history. In summary, while artefactual remains are expected, the historical activities related to fairs and agriculture indicate that limited structural elements may have survived.
