The left atrial appendage (LAA) is a small muscular extension arising from the anterolateral wall of the left atrium (LA). LAA contributes to atrial pressure regulation and plays an endocrine and hemodynamic role in cardiovascular physiology (1). During the third to fourth weeks of gestation, the LAA develops from the primordial LA and retains a trabeculated morphology that differs from the smooth-walled LA components formed through incorporation of the pulmonary veins (1).
