Summary This article describes the setting up and running of ‘circles of friends’. We outline this approach to the inclusion in mainstream schools of children with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties. In this paper we wish to: (1) report on our experiences of setting up circles of friends, and (2) promote reflection and discussion around the whole area of involving pupils in the social support of vulnerable or difficult individuals.
